The 27-year-old, a two-time Super Bowl winner and a central part of the setup under Andy Reid, took to X on Monday morning saying: ‘For the last four years or so, I’ve been in this cycle on injury, pain, rehab… I’ve felt stuck in it.

‘The only way I see out is to no longer play football. It’s taken my joy of this game away.

‘Thank you everyone would supported me on this incredible journey! I love you all!’

The tweet was posted at around 8:30am in Kansas City, meaning many fans would have woken up to the news of one of their heroes calling it a day.

But Reid was quick to make sure fans knew he was joking, tweeting the Jim Carry peeking out gif – much to the relief of many Kansas City fans.

‘I hate today. Wake me up when April 2nd starts,’ one fan wrote back to him.

Another said: ‘This was the first April Fools joke that got me and it’s only 9:30am!’.

Reid and the Chiefs are gearing up for a shot at history next season as they bid to record an unprecedent Super Bowl ‘three-peat’.

Reid will enter the final year of his three-year, $31.5m deal with the Chiefs next season.
