Chiefs Fans Breathe a Sigh of Relief as Thompson’s Prognosis is ‘Good’ After Cardiac Arrest

 

KANSAS City Chiefs defensive end BJ Thompson is recovering after suffering a seizure and cardiac arrest at practice.

After being taken off the field in an ambulance, Thompson is awake and responsive, according to his agent.

Thompson is a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Stephen F. Austin University.

NFL reporter Tom Pelissero initially reported on the medical emergency.

“The Chiefs canceled all team activities today after a backup defensive lineman had a seizure in a special teams meeting and went into cardiac arrest, per sources,” he wrote.

Thompson appeared in one game during the 2023 NFL season

“The team’s medical staff worked quickly, an ambulance was called and the player is currently in stable condition.”

Chiefs reporter Pete Sweeney credited the doctors and trainers on site for their quick response in treating Thompson.

“Doctors and trainers responded quickly, and he (the player) is currently in stable condition at a local area hospital,” he wrote.

Pelissero followed up his initial reporting on Thompson’s cardiac arrest, saying the 25-year-old’s “prognosis is good.”

The Chiefs held a charity softball game after the scary event, where defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulo spoke about the emergency.

“Let me say this before I say anything, I’m thinking about BJ right now,” Spagnuolo told local Fox affiliate WDAF.

“It was scary. I think the guys were a little bit scared, I know I was.

“But a lot of praying and [VP of sports medicine and performance] Rick [Burkholder] and his staff did a terrific job.”

NFL fans breathed a sigh of relief at the new report and shared their well wishes for Thompson’s recovery.

“Wishing him a great recovery. Heart issues are not fun,” one fan said.

“Such good news! Wishing him a speedy recovery!” another fan said.

“Thank God,” a third fan said.

The Chiefs returned to organized team activities last month after winning their second consecutive Super Bowl.

Those OTAs are now over after their third segment of the training closed on Friday.

Mandatory minicamp opens June 11 and will run for three days.

The Chiefs will return to training camp in the last week of July.
